News from the new Sony Bravia ad shoot

Having learned the details of the latest shoot for Sony Bravia, I wasn’t exactly expecting the same visual spectacle provided by something like ‘balls’ or ‘paint’.  For starters, there was absolutely no mention of ‘colour’ in any of the information I had received about this ad.  But when we arrived in Venaria, the first thing you could see down the small cobbled street, was an octopus-like shape of bright red lights, like a bulbous fairground ride.

As we got closer to the central square – where the contraption sat – the internal shape within the cage of red lights began to rotate, revealing images of footballer Kaka (which had been shot on a separate shoot) spinning inside.   As the thing gathered pace, those 64 images seamlessly linked together, forming one fluid motion of Kaka kicking a ball, which was visible through the 6mm slits in the zoetrope.

We discovered that, earlier in the shoot that day, Kaka had been on set, interacting with the crowd of extras.   All that was visible of Kaka by the point we arrived was a mass of journalists huddled around the man, who struggled to make it out of the shoot for all the press attention.   Nevertheless, even while the footballer was there, the crowd was clearly taken by the structure in front of them (although there was certainly some encouragement to whoop and cheer louder by the film crew, who were winding the extras up in Italian).

No one at Fallon or Sony was willing to reveal what music will accompany the ad, although they said that they had a “shortlist”.  One thing that was clear though, this was certainly not going to be a ‘colour like no other’ ad. In fact, I later found out, the strapline for this campaign will be “motion like no other”.   The spectacle of the spinning construction, illuminated by bright lights, and gazed upon by a crowd of extras, was certainly impressive. I only hope that the final edit does it justice, which lies in the hands of the relatively unknown director Vernie Yeung. Having said that though, Nicolai Fuglsig was an unknown in the production world before “balls” hit our screens.   Will this ad have the same impact? Will it be better than paint or Play-doh? Watch this space…
